Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) Scheme

About the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) Scheme

The Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) Scheme, 1952 is a social security scheme administered by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) under the Employees’ Provident Funds & Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952. The scheme is designed to help eligible employees build long-term savings through regular contributions during employment.

The EPF forms one of the three major schemes administered by EPFO. The other two are the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS), 1995 and the Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme (EDLI), 1976.

Under the EPF system, contributions are made during an employee’s service and the accumulated amount, along with applicable interest, can provide financial support at retirement or in other permitted circumstances.

Key Features of the EPF Scheme

1. Retirement Savings

EPF encourages employees to build a financial corpus throughout their working years. The accumulated balance, together with credited interest, can be available on retirement or resignation, subject to the applicable rules.

2. Regular Contributions

The scheme operates through contributions from employees and employers as prescribed under the EPF framework. These regular contributions help employees accumulate savings over time.

3. Interest on EPF Balance

Interest is credited to members’ EPF accounts at a rate determined by the Central Government in consultation with the Central Board. The EPF Scheme provides for calculation of interest on monthly running balances.

4. Partial Withdrawals

EPF members can make partial withdrawals for certain permitted purposes. EPFO lists purposes such as house construction, higher education, marriage and illness, subject to the applicable eligibility and withdrawal conditions.

5. Transfer of EPF Account

Members changing jobs can transfer their accumulated EPF balance from their previous account to their current account, subject to applicable procedures. EPFO provides Form 13 for transfer of an old account to a new one.

6. Nomination Facility

EPF members can nominate eligible family members to receive applicable benefits. EPFO states that the nomination under the EPF Scheme also applies to the EDLI Scheme.

7. Online and Digital Services

EPFO has expanded digital services for members and employers. Members can access various services through online platforms and the UMANG app. Current EPFO member services include UAN-related facilities, claim services and other account-related functions.

Recent Developments in EPF

EPFO has continued to introduce digital and service-related changes to make EPF services more accessible.

UAN Activation Through UMANG

One recent change is the use of Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology (FAT) through the UMANG app for UAN activation and generation of new UANs. EPFO’s member portal states that the earlier direct UAN activation and allotment facilities on the portal have been discontinued in favour of the UMANG-based process.

Digital Member Services

EPFO continues to move towards contactless, paperless and technology-driven services. Its stated mission includes improving service delivery through digital platforms and expanding auto-claim and multi-location processing.

E-Nomination

EPFO’s member portal currently states that e-Nomination is mandatory under the EPF Scheme, 2026 and can be filed or updated during the period of service.

Continued Expansion of Online Services

Members can use EPFO’s online systems and UMANG for several services instead of relying entirely on physical processes. EPFO also provides digital facilities for pensioners, including Digital Life Certificate submission using facial authentication technology.

Why the EPF Scheme Is Important

The EPF Scheme provides a structured way for employees to save for their long-term financial needs while working. Its benefits extend beyond retirement savings because the framework also provides for permitted withdrawals, account transfers and nomination facilities.

For UPSC and other competitive examinations, it is important to understand that EPF, EPS and EDLI are three separate schemes administered by EPFO:

  • EPF: Provident fund savings and related benefits
  • EPS: Pension benefits
  • EDLI: Insurance benefit linked to the death of an eligible member while in service
